New Orleans Traveling Story Booths

One Time In New Orleans

The beloved city of New Orleans is turning 300 years old and with that many years under its belt there are plenty of stories to be told by its residents and those who traveled there to experience all the city has to offer. Along with TOOL of North America and their creative director DJ Neff, SCPS helped capture these memorable stories of New Orleans by fabricating two unique state-of-the-art story booths, one placed as a permanent fixture at the city’s airport and the other, a mobile unit that will be traveling around the city and stopping at festivals in the new year.

The project began with an extensive design period taking into account airport regulations, size restrictions and the logistics of delivering the permanent unit and reinforcing the mobile unit for a year of travels. We fabricated the permanent booth from scratch and retrofitted a 20-foot cargo container delivered from New Orleans to be used as the mobile unit.

These story booths were more like fully automated production studios with multiple projectors and cameras hidden behind a two-way mirrored wall inside the air-conditioned interior. While the stories were being told, AI (artificial intelligence) picked up on key words from behind the mirror and projected images onto the back wall of the booth, while a second projector displayed colors and additional imagery onto the storyteller creating stunning visuals that complimented the personal naratives.

We rigged out the exterior with reclaimed materials from the heart and soul of New Orleans including antique doorknobs and cypress wood from a 19th century farmhouse. Four viewing monitors were mounted to one long exterior side of the unit surrounded by a hand-painted 17th century map of the city. These monitors were sheltered by an awning made of corrugated metal - a look inspired by the city's fishing camps. Even the antique furnishings inside the booth came from New Orleanian homes and businesses adding to the over-all charm and nostalgia.  Along with pieces of the city's past, the unit also included newly fabricated signage highlighted by custom LED’s visible from multiple sides.

With so many tangible elements from this historic city woven into these units, this project seemed to take on an electrifying soul of it's own. Our crew became very attached to the booths and inserted a great deal of their own heart and soul into their work. An enormous sense of pride was felt company wide when the units left our Los Angeles studio and made the journey across the United States to their destination.
